Michael Nisco, MD, MBA, is Professor of Medicine and Director of Hospice and Palliative Care Services at UCI Health. A graduate of the UCI School of Medicine, he completed fellowship training in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Harvard Medical School and earned an MBA in Health Care Operations and Policy from UC Irvine. He is board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and was recognized by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine as one of its Visionaries in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Dr. Nisco is a physician leader whose work spans clinical care, medical education, quality improvement, and health system transformation. He oversees UCI Health’s hospice and palliative care services, leading initiatives that improve the quality, value, and patient experience of care for individuals living with serious illness.
His clinical expertise includes complex symptom management, serious illness communication, advance care planning, and end of life care. He works closely with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure that treatment aligns with each patient’s goals, values, and preferences.
Dr. Nisco’s academic interests focus on health care delivery, clinical operations, physician workforce development, and the design of innovative models of care for patients with serious illness. His work emphasizes translating evidence into practice through multidisciplinary collaboration, operational excellence, and patient centered innovation.
